The journey started in 1983 when I bought my first record which was
“Planet Rock” by Africa Bambatta & the Soul Sonic Force. Until then I
was listening to everyone from Adam & the Ants to The Human League, to
Yazoo to Kool & the Gang…But on that day my journey to look for the
pefect beat began.
I spent every penny on buying the latest imports from the top
specialist shops like London’s Groove
Records, Bluebird Records & Hitman Records. My passion was Electro
Funk and the whole new wave of electronic soul that had me in a spin,
so as my collection grew my rep grew around my local area as the man
who had the phattest tapes in the area. Soon my rep reached local DJ’s
ears and I was asked to play at local parties and club houses. I was
given the name DJ Pugwash because a friend said I looked like the
children’s cartoon pirate of the same name and that kick started my
career as a DJ.
I progressed from local parties to local clubs and then to become
resident at some of London top west end nightclubs including The
Lyceum (Shaftesbury Av), The Emporium (Now Movida), Club Iceni, The
Wag Club, Bootleggers, Slap Harry’s Bar and many more.
There are not many top London clubs I haven’t played and throughout
the years I have played all over the UK as well as Ireland, Spain and
the USA with some of the biggest names in the UK. One of my big breaks
was when I joined a host of DJ’s on a radio mix show called “Back to
Black” which was aired in London (Choice FM), New York (WBLS) &
Milan(Radio Centro Suave). The idea was to mix all the latest hip-hop
& R&B with Soulful house in a non stop blend. My fellow DJ’s included
David Morales,C&C Music Factory,Benji Candilero & Masters at Work.
1994 was the year I turned to pirate radio that lasted over 10 years
with various stations in and around London.
During this period my contacts in the music industry lead to working
with record labels such as Big Life Records, Pendulum Records (US) &
Island Records in
a A&R scout/Promotions role. At the same time I got involved in
concert promotions with a bunch of friends which resulted in putting
on live events with among others, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound,
Usher, Adina Howard, Aaron Hall, PM Dawn, De La Soul, Tribe Called
Quest, Montell Jordan & Busta Rhymes.
Later on was involved in Tour Management for various artists from the
UK & the US. Meanwhile I had also got into promoting my own club
nights and many top London venues, which of many where the exclusive
VIP clubs including Paper, 10 Rooms, China White & Tokyo Joes.
Having met many artists and producers over those years I turned that
experience to Artist Development. In 2000 I met the original members
of a girl group at my record store, who were looking for help with getting a deal.
After two years of working on their project they became “Misteeq’.
This is an example of many artists’ careers I was involved with
including a then fresh-faced Aussie called “Peter Andre”.
Also in 2000 I turned to legal radio on a local station called Life FM
(Bang FM) which lasted 4 years of prime time slots including Drive
Time with my new co-host Paris Cesvette. In 2006 I had enough of the
R&B/Hip Hop scene and turned back to my long love affair with soulful
house music by joining online radio station
Pressure radio. I have not looked back since and am content with
sharing the music I love with the faithful.
My journey looking for the perfect beat is not over yet and hopes for
many more years of searching.
